Image Preparation

The assignment for Lab 4 was to color correct and sharpen 3 images (taken by Instructor Andrea Massalski), to resize the images to be 200 pixels wide, give them a 5-pixel black border, put the images onto a Layout page, and then add a copyright to our work. Above you see my results!

This assignment was a lot more challenging than I expected. I still feel awkward with the layers principle used by Photoshop. Basically what happens is that every element on this image (such as each area of text, each individual photo, the bar of color at the bottom, and even the copyright) is on a different layer. This allows you to make changes to each layer separately, and to go back and forth between different layers. However, it's an awkward way to work if you're not used to it!

Anyway - that's what this whole class is all about - learning new techniques and getting used to them. As you can imagine, I'm expecting this process to have big pay-off for me as we work on the photos I took on our European vacation this year. Hopefully I'll have some of these photos to show soon...

I like the light grey neutral background and the creativity with the fonts. Where are the copyrights?

Nice layout; arrangement of photos is attractive with great font stylings. Overall, I like the greys on grey look very much, but I'm not sure about the bar across the bottom; it doesn't seem as well-integrated as other elements.

P.S. Sorry, meant to mention I think another strength is that your design elements and choices also allow the photos to dominate, to really stand out. I think that has to be one of the priorities of a photo web page. AND I like your text gradiation! That's it.

This is a clean layout and I agree that the neutral gray background helps to make the photos stand out. You could sharpen them slightly more. You are missing the copyrights for them. Also the horizontal image is not sized properly, it should be sized so the height of the verticals is the width of the horizontal image, look at some of the others. They are all too big from the specs.

You got very creative trying different type effects. For me they are too busy and flowery for a site page. If you want to use flowery element, it is recommended to only use one and not many that compete with each other, or several with the same effect. However this is just a design comment and I appreciate you explorations with the techniques.
Oh, and the bar at the bottom could get cut off in a broswer window...careful of what elements are at the bottom of a page. It could however be effective if the information is repeated information or not crtical.

Your biggest problem was getting the sizing correct on this. The horizontal needs to match the vertical height dimensions.
